The regiment was formed in St. Louis during the summer of 1861.  Uniform from a cabinet card of William H. Bates, of Co. H, taken in 1892 for his daughter  "to preserve the semblance of your father as a soldier for the preservation of the Union, as  a member of the 8th Mo. Inft. (American Zouaves)..."  He also describes the uniform in detail and writes, "the regiment voted unanimously against the red, baggy zouave pants..."  Source: Gateway Heritage, The Quartly Magazine of the Missouri Historical Society, Vol. 19, No. 4 (Spring 1999). pp. 26,27.  Thanks to Bill Winters for sending a copy of the magazine.  The 8th fought mainly in the West and was in Lew Wallace's 3rd Div., 1st Brigade (with the 11th and 24th Indiana) at Shiloh.
