Established in 1859, the New York Scotsmen requested the 79th designation as a  link to the Cameron Highlanders (Britain's 79th Regiment of Foot).  Later designated the 79th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment.  Source: Osprey, Men-at-Arms Series, No. 207, American Civil War Armies 5 Volunteer Militia.  See Plate C3.
